National Safety Month focuses on keeping each other safe at work, on the road, and at home. Though we focus on home security systems, there are many ways to protect yourself in your home to avoid injury or issues. Let’s take a look at fives ways to safe-proof your home.
Fires
Household fires are devastating to your home and your family and the luckiest make it out safely. In 2015, there were over 365,500 reported household fires totaling seven billion dollars in damage and loss (LINK: http://www.nfpa.org/news-and-research/fire-statistics-and-reports/fire-statistics/fires-by-property-type/residential/home-fires). Don’t fall victim to tragic events with this fire safety checklist.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator type=”transparent” up=”20″ down=”20″][vc_column_text]
Fire safety checklist:
- Install fire alarms
- Check batteries regularly
- Buy multiple fire extinguishers
- Do not leave candles burning
- Make sure fire elements are clear of flammable materials
- Recycle broken or damaged appliances with frayed wires
- Make an escape plan and know it to a “T”

Falls
Did you know falls are the second leading cause of accidental or unintentional injury deaths worldwide? Even though the Life Alert commercials paint a picture of the elderly making the most falls, we are all at risk if we aren’t careful. Make sure you educate your family and yourself on preventative measures with a fall risk list.
Fall Risk List:
- Check bathrooms for common slippery areas and apply anti-slip mats
- Move cords and wires from walkways
- Encourage your children to put toys away when they are done playing
- Move furniture that impedes walkways
- Make sure outdoor pathways are clear of debris
- Check railings and handles for proper support
- Check staircases for loose steps

Choking
Though food is responsible for many choking-related fatalities, there are many other ways to be susceptible to this hazard if proper precautions are not taken to ensure safety. From elderly to infants and everyone in between, it is important to take note of simple measures and education to be ready at a moment’s notice.
Choke-Free Checklist:
- Teach yourself and your family the Heimlich Maneuver
- Invest in a CPR class for further education
- Check toys for small, easily-digestible pieces
- Keep cabinets secure and closed
- Cut food into smaller bites and chew properly
- Monitor your child during playtime

Carbon Monoxide
Carbon monoxide is a gas that is virtually impossible to detect by smell, sight, or sound, making it difficult to notice. While low exposure to carbon monoxide gases can cause headaches and dizziness, high levels lead to impaired vision, vomiting, and even death. Take simple measures to keep CO poisoning at bay.
Carbon Monoxide Monitoring Checklist:
- Install reliable CO monitors
- Check batteries on regular bases
- Educate your family on CO poisoning
- Check household appliances for leaks

Poison
We’ve all heard terrible stories of the curious children getting under the sink and into items they shouldn’t. But, it’s not always just children. Adults are susceptible to poisoning just as easily as children if proper preventative measures are not taken.
Poison Checklist:
- Know this number and post it by the phone (800) 222-1222
- Keep cabinets containing potentially harmful products locked
- Keep chemicals away from food sources or food-prep areas
- Keep medications out-of-reach of children
Even though a lot of these checklist items seem obvious, they can be easily overlooked. Getting the family involved in a great way to teach, learn, and build trust knowing that everyone is on the same page and knows what to do should something like the above arise. Keep it safe and happy National Safety Month![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column][vc_separator type=”transparent” up=”40″ down=”40″][/vc_column][/vc_row]
