After a long and dreary Winter and a soggy Spring, the warm sunny days we’ve been experiencing here in Central Indiana are downright good for the soul. But, as the weather takes a turn for the better and we’re anxious to spend our time outside, it’s easy to forget the silent dangers that too much sun and excessive heat present. It’s with daydreams of Summer fun to come and the upward tick in the temps in mind that we’re talking tips for beating the Summer heat. The best advice we can give you is to avoid the heat and stay out of the sun if you can. That being said, we realize that after being stuck indoors during the long Winter staying inside is the opposite of what you want to do, so here are some other ways to protect yourself this Summer.

Dress for the Heat.

If you can’t avoid being in the sun completely, dress appropriately for it. Wear loose fitting items of clothing that are lightweight and light in color. Lighter colors reflect heat and sunlight more effectively and allow your body to regulate and maintain a normal body temperature more easily.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator type=”transparent” up=”15″ down=”15″]

Protect Your Skin.

Sunburns slow your skin’s ability to stay cool so you should always wear sunscreen with a high SPF. Try to wear a wide-brimmed hat and clothing that covers as much of your body as possible to protect your skin from the sun, and whenever you can, avoid direct sunshine.

Stay Hydrated.

Drink plenty of water and natural juices and stay well hydrated. Even though you may not feel thirsty, when you’re participating in outdoor activities your body absorbs fluids slower than it loses water through perspiration. Avoid alcoholic beverages and caffeinated beverages like sodas, coffees, or teas. Alcohol and caffeine constrict blood vessels near the skin which reduces the amount of heat the body can release.

Eat Less, More Often.

During hot days, you should avoid eating large meals and instead eat several smaller meals every couple of hours throughout the day and avoid foods that are high in protein. Foods that are higher in protein increase your metabolic heat.

Take It Easy.

Slow down! When it’s hot outside reduce the amount of work you’re doing. Reschedule strenuous activities like bike rides, runs, or yard work. The best time to do these things is early in the morning before the day heats up or in the evening as the day cools down.

Cool Down.

If you feel yourself overheating take a cool shower, wrap yourself in cool wet towels, go for a swim, sit in the shade, or have a cool glass of water.

Protecting yourself this Summer doesn’t have to mean staying inside all the time! By practicing these Summer heat safety tips regularly you’ll significantly decrease your risk of developing a heat disorder all the while enjoying the beautiful weather.

Stay safe out there – and ENJOY![/vc_column_text][vc_separator type=”transparent” up=”10″ down=”10″][/vc_column][/vc_row]
