So you just move in and discover your new home comes with a hardwired alarm system that previously connected to an alarm company, but is no longer active. Or maybe you installed an alarm system years ago in the home you plan to never leave, and you’re considering a possible upgrade.
Sure, you can spend money on a whole new home security system, but you may not need to if your old system is compatible with Alarm.com’s System Enhancement Module (SEM).
This new feature allows homes with older systems to migrate to the Alarm.com app, which offers more reliable, wireless home security technology. Currently, Alarm.com is compatible with security systems made by Honeywell, DSC, GE Security, Interlogix, Qolsys and 2GIG.
Here’s a look at how the SEM works, and the interactive home security features you can’t do without.
How Does the System Enhancement Module Work?
In the past, many alarm systems relied on a IP-based server to host communications. Now the SEM allows certain alarm panels to communicate with the Alarm.com platform, which requires cellular communications. The SEM provides alarm signaling to the central monitoring station, via Verizon’s reliable nationwide network, instead of a landline phone connection.
Why does this matter? It means it doesn’t rely on a vulnerable phone line or broadband cable, so emergency signals will get through even if the power goes out, the phone line and internet go down, or an intruder smashes your panel.
All previous user codes will be wiped from the VISTA panel, and Alarm.com will generate a random master code so you can manage user codes remotely via the Alarm.com app. If you want to keep previous user codes, they can be pushed back to the system after the Alarm.com services are activated.
The SEM also requires no dedicated battery or transformer. It runs on the control panel’s A/C power and backup battery sources and functions reliably for more than 24 hours during a power outage.
How Will SEM Improve My Home Security System?
Say goodbye to false alarms. With the Alarm.com app, you can create customized email and text message notifications for any type of alarm or non-alarm activity at your home. With remote control of Z-Wave devices through web and mobile interfaces, you’ll always know what’s happening in and around your home, and the inconvenience of dealing with a false alarm becomes a thing of the past.
Using a phone, laptop or tablet, users can access the system at any time, from any location. Forgot to close and lock the garage door before going to bed? Arm or disarm the system with a simple tap on your phone. Want to know whether your teenager arrived home by curfew? Set up an alert for when they arrive home. Want to answer the door, but you’re busy or not home? Use the video doorbell feature, so you can see who’s at the door and tell them you’re busy.
With the Alarm.com SEM, homeowners who operate Nest thermostats and other smart home connected devices can continue to use those devices and upgrade when new options become available.
Is My Home Security System Compatible with Alarm.com’s SEM?
Ask ASI, an Alarm.com dealer, to inspect your home security system for compatibility. Our top-notch technicians pride themselves on providing you the best integrated technology and customer service.
Currently, the SEM does not work with AUI devices, including the 6280, Tuxedo Touch, and other touchscreen keypads. However, an Over the Air update will soon make the SEM compatible with these devices.
